Sania-Mattek cruises to third round of US Open

New York, Sep 1 (UNI) Sania Mirza and her partner Bethanie Mattek of United States stormed into the third round of the US Open beating Australian-Slovak duo of Bryanne Stewart and Jarmila Gajdosova in straight sets here today.

The 16th seeded Indo-US pair trounced the unseeded Australian-Slovak duo 6-2, 6-2.

Their next challenger will be decided after the duel between the second seeded US-Australian pair of Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur and unseeded duo of Elena Dementieva of Russia and Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

This is Sania's best performance in the flushing meadows till now as she, along with Mahesh Bhupathi also cruised to the second round in the mixed doubles, thrashing seventh seeded Russo-Canadian pair of Elena Likhovtseva and Daniel Nestor 6-0, 6-2.

Sania has also qualified for the third round in the singles section.
