Sania sent packing by Petrova in Wimbledon second round
London, June 28 (UNI) An out-of-sorts Sania Mirza was shown the door by 11th seed Nadia Petrova of Russia 2-6, 2-6 in the second round of Wimbledon here today.
The 20-year-old Indian, who carried the hopes of a billion people, was nowhere near her best and was outplayed by the world number nine Russian in just over one hour.
Sania, who seemed to be in good touch in her first round demolition of Russian Yaroslava Shvedova, had to eat the humble pie today.
Today's loss was not due to her trademark unforced errors as she and her rival had equal numbers of them -- 18 each.
Both of them had also an alomost equal number of service double faults -- four for Sania to three for Petrova.
Surprisingly, Sania lost both the sets in similar fashion, the only difference being the first lasted 28 minutes while the second took a little longer -- 36 minutes.
She was broken in her first serve and second game of each set to trail 0-3. She then held her next two serves. At 2-5 scoreline, she failed to hold her serves each time to bow out of the most prestigious Grand Slam.
Sania will team up Shahar Peer of Israel in doubles and duo will face Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden and Lilia Osterloh of USA in the opening round.
