Serena Williams taking 'time and space' to decide on possible Wimbledon return

Serena Williams will take her time to decide over a possible appearance at Wimbledon, following a winning return to tennis alongside Victoria Mboko at the Queen's Club Championships.

Almost four years on from her last competitive outing, Williams is playing alongside Mboko in the women's doubles in London, and they passed their first test on Tuesday (June 9).

They impressed during a 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 victory over third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar and Erin Routliffe at the Andy Murray Arena, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund will be their next opponents, and looking further ahead, Williams has already confirmed she will play doubles at next week's Berlin Open.

She is yet to make an announcement regarding a grand slam return but would almost certainly be granted a wildcard if she signalled her intention to play at Wimbledon.

For now, the 44-year-old – who has won the singles crown at Wimbledon seven times and triumphed in doubles with her sister Venus on six occasions – is keeping her options open.

"Like I said the other day, it's just a day at a time. I still have a little time to decide, and they have been great about giving me that space and time to decide," she said.

Asked to rate her comeback performance, Williams said: "My ‌God. What do you think? A C-minus?

"I got nervous right before the match, like, maybe 30 minutes before, and then I just let it go.

"With all the elements, considering coming back on grass is probably not the easiest surface. Overall, it was decent."

The singles tournaments at Wimbledon begin on June 29, with the women's singles final taking place on Saturday, 11 July. The women's doubles will start on July 1.
