Shapovalov in upset as Zverev follows Tsonga out of US Open

Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov stunned Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the US Open, while fourth seed Alexander Zverev also bowed out in New York.

Denis Shapovalov celebrates in a shock victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

New York, August 31: Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov stunned Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the US Open, while fourth seed Alexander Zverev also bowed out.

Shapovalov's star continues to rise following his second-round victory over the French eighth seed at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday.

That was not the only upset as fourth-seeded German Zverev went down to Borna Coric.

Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem and David Goffin did manage to fly the flag for the seeds at the year's final grand slam.

SHAPOVALOV CONTINUES FAST-RISING TRAJECTORY

The 18-year-old qualifier was not overawed on Wednesday as he upstaged Tsonga 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to reach the third round.

Shapovalov announced himself on home soil at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where he stunned Rafael Nadal en route to the semi-finals.

And the teenager showed that run of form is not a one-off as he looks ahead to facing Kyle Edmund.

"This win, it's definitely another confidence boost," Shapovalov said. "It shows that Montreal wasn't a fluke week. To do it back-to-back, it's not easy. I've had to go through qualifying, which is also stacked with super tough players."

CORIC STOPS IN-FORM ZVEREV

The talented Croatian came from a set down to trump Zverev 3-6 7-5 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-4).

Zverev was among the favourites to win the US Open following titles in Washington and Montreal and the withdrawals of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori.

But Zverev was wasteful, converting only one of 11 break points after spurning the chance to win the fourth set at 0-40.

South African 28th seed Kevin Anderson awaits Coric.

CILIC LOOKING FIT AND HEALTHY

The Croatian fifth seed and 2014 champion is making his first appearance at a tournament since reaching the Wimbledon final, having struggled with an adductor injury.

But Cilic is looking fit following his 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory over Florian Mayer after tallying 51 winners and 18 aces.

Cilic and 29th seed Diego Schwartzman will go head-to-head in the third round.

DIMITROV STAYS HOT IN NEW YORK

The seventh seed eased past qualifier Vaclav Safranek 6-1 6-4 6-2.

Dimitrov hit 22 winners and six aces as he extended his winning streak to six matches and 13 consecutive sets.

Winner of the Western & Southern Open a fortnight ago, Dimitrov will next face Andrey Rublev.

If he gets past Rublev, he could potentially meet 18th seed Gael Monfils, who outlasted Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-4.

Austrian sixth seed Thiem saw off Alex De Minaur 6-4 6-1 6-1, ninth seed Goffin defeated Julien Benneteau 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-2, while John Isner (10) and Tomas Berdych (15) moved into the next round.

KYRGIOS MELTS DOWN

Nick Kyrgios had been without a coach for almost two years when he teamed up with Sebastien Grosjean last May, but the 14th seed is unsure how long their working relationship will continue following a 6-3 1-6 6-4 6-1 defeat to fellow Australian John Millman in the first round.

"I'm not good enough for him," said Kyrgios, who sustained a shoulder injury in the first set. "He's very dedicated. He's an unbelievable coach. He probably deserves a player that is probably more dedicated to the game than I am. He deserves a better athlete than me.

"I'm not dedicated to the game at all. He's helped me a lot, especially with the training, in training sessions.

"There are players out there that are more dedicated, that want to get better, that strive to get better every day, the one-percenters. I'm not that guy."

Fellow seeds Richard Gasquet, Gilles Muller, Pablo Cuevas, and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Fabio Fognini also crashed out.
