Sharapova makes winning start in Qatar Open

Qatar, Feb 21: Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova was pushed all the way by Galina Voskoboeva in the second round of the Qatar Open on Wednesday, but eventually beat her fellow Russian 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. And world number three and tournament top seed Ana Ivanovic overcame an ankle injury to beat Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-1.

Ivanovic led 4-2 and survived three break points, before closing to within a game of taking the first set. Ivanovic took complete control after picking up a break in the first game of the second set. But she suffered an injury as Govortsova served to stay in the match at 5-1 down, falling to the floor after appearing to twist her ankle. After receiving medical treatment, the 20-year-old played through the pain barrier and produced a succession of powerful forehands to clinch the victory.

Maria Sharapova looked to continue her perfect start to the year when she met Galina Voskoboeva. Voskoboeva put her fellow Russian under pressure throughout the first set, but Sharapova claimed a crucial break in the ninth game and went on to serve out the set 6-4.

Voskoboeva kept on her pressure in the second. And after a succession of breaks, she took the second 6-4. And it was the first set that Sharapova had dropped this year.

Breaks were traded at the start of the third set, but Sharapova took the next five games to wrap up a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
There's also a victory for Chinese player Li Na, as she beat Anna Chakvetadze of Russia 7-6 6-4.
