Sinner Avenges Montreal Loss To Rublev, Reaches Cincinnati Semis; Sabalenka Eyes Swiatek Clash

Jannik Sinner reached the Cincinnati Open semi-finals with a victory over Andrey Rublev. Aryna Sabalenka also advanced, setting up a semi-final against Iga Swiatek.

Jannik Sinner advanced to the Cincinnati Open semi-finals after a challenging 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Andrey Rublev. This victory allowed Sinner to avenge his recent defeat to Rublev in Montreal. He had previously been eliminated from the Canadian Open by Rublev and missed the Paris Olympic Games due to tonsillitis.

Sinner faced tough conditions in Ohio, battling strong winds and an early set deficit. Despite being down a set and facing two break points, he managed to save both and recover from a fall during a crucial 26-shot rally at 4-4. He then served out the second set on his second opportunity.

Sinner Beats Rublev, Sabalenka vs Swiatek Next

Aryna Sabalenka secured her place in the women's semi-finals with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win over Liudmila Samsonova. The match lasted just one hour and 19 minutes, with Sabalenka winning 10 of the last 13 games. This victory evened her head-to-head record with Samsonova at 2-2.

Sabalenka's performance marked her fourth semi-final appearance at the Cincinnati Open, tying her with Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, and Simona Halep for the most among WTA players in the Open Era.

Reflecting on his match against Rublev, Sinner expressed pride in his resilience. "It took a lot of mental strength today," he said. "It was very tough conditions, very windy. In the first set he started very well and I didn't play my best tennis but in the second set, I felt I had a lot of chances. I waited for my chance. I am very happy to make the semis."

Sinner's ability to hold off Rublev's third-set resurgence was crucial in securing his two-hour and 25-minute victory. His determination was evident as he overcame adversity to reach the semi-finals.

Historic Achievements

Sabalenka's achievement of reaching four semi-finals at the Cincinnati Open places her among an elite group of players. Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, and Simona Halep are the only other women to have accomplished this feat in the Open Era.

The Cincinnati Open continues to showcase high-level tennis as players like Sinner and Sabalenka demonstrate their skill and determination on court.

The tournament has seen intense competition, with players overcoming challenging conditions and tough opponents to advance further. Both Sinner and Sabalenka have shown remarkable performances that highlight their capabilities.
