Sinner Kicks Off Canadian Open Defence With Solid Win Against Coric

Jannik Sinner started his Canadian Open title defence with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Borna Coric. This victory marks a promising start for Sinner on hard courts following his Miami Open win and precedes his US Open preparations.

Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Canadian Open title with a straightforward 6-2, 6-4 win over Borna Coric in Montreal. The match lasted one hour and 37 minutes, showcasing Sinner's dominance on the court. This victory follows his first ATP Masters 1000 crown at the 2023 event, his Miami Open win, and his first grand slam at this year's Australian Open.

Sinner's performance was impressive, especially considering it was his first hard-court match since March. He missed the Paris Olympic Games due to tonsillitis but showed no signs of rust. He played confidently from the start, losing only four points on his first serve. Breaks in the third games of both sets secured his path to victory.

Sinner Wins in Canadian Open Start

Reflecting on his win, Sinner said: "I've been here for a little bit so I'm maybe a bit more used to the conditions, but still, I'm very happy about the performance. It was a very tough match. Even if you watched the score, it felt closer for sure. I had to save a break point in the second set and if he makes that one it could potentially change the match. It was a very good mindset today and I'll try to keep going."

Sinner will face either Alejandro Tabilo or Lorenzo Sonego in the last 16 as he gears up for a potential title run at the US Open. His recent form suggests he is well-prepared for upcoming challenges.

Since the start of the 2020 season, Sinner has become one of three players to secure over 150 match wins on hard courts. Daniil Medvedev leads with 179 wins, followed by Andrey Rublev with 151 wins.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Sinner's latest victory also marked a significant milestone in his career. At just 22 years and 357 days old, he became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal to achieve 40 consecutive wins against players ranked outside the ATP's top 20. Nadal accomplished this feat at Indian Wells in 2009 when he was 22 years and 285 days old.

This achievement highlights Sinner's consistency and skill on hard courts, positioning him as a formidable competitor in upcoming tournaments.

Sinner's journey continues as he prepares for future matches with confidence and determination. His recent performances indicate that he is ready to take on new challenges and achieve further success in his career.
