Sumit Nagal Reaches New Career-High ATP Ranking, Breaks Into Top 70

Sumit Nagal reached a new career-high ranking of 68 in the latest ATP Rankings released on Monday, making him the fourth highest-ranked Indian man since the system was introduced in 1973.

Nagal climbed five spots after his historic Grand Slam appearances, surpassing Sashi Menon, with whom he had previously shared the joint-fourth highest ranking of 71 on the all-time list.

Ahead of Sumit are Somdev Devvarman (62), Ramesh Krishnan (23) and Vijay Amritraj (18).

The 26-year-old debuted at the French Open but was defeated in the first round. He also made his first appearance in the men’s singles main draw at Wimbledon, where he was again eliminated in the opening round.

The Paris Olympics-bound Nagal is the first Indian in five years to play a Wimbledon men’s singles main draw match.

He is only the second Indian player to make the cut in the singles event in consecutive editions of the Summer Games since Leander Paes (1992-2000).

Sumit is having a great 2023 so far. First, he defeated then-world No. 37 Alexander Bublik in the first round of Australian Open. He has won two Challenger events this season: the Heilbronn Challenger and the Chennai Open ATP Challenger. He also became the first Indian male player to win a Masters 1000 match on clay, qualified for the Paris Olympics, and made his Wimbledon debut in both singles and doubles.

The Paris Olympics will be his second consecutive Olympics. He participated in the Tokyo Olympics, where he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 32.
