Swiatek Sets Up US Open Quarter-Final Clash With Pegula After Dominant Win

Iga Swiatek moves into the US Open quarter-finals by beating Liudmila Samsonova and is set to face Jessica Pegula. Swiatek's performance marks her 100th grand slam match, showcasing her growing confidence and skill on the court.

Iga Swiatek is gaining momentum at the US Open, advancing to the quarter-finals after defeating Liudmila Samsonova. Swiatek, a five-time grand slam champion, aims for her second title at Flushing Meadows. She will face Jessica Pegula in the next round after beating Samsonova 6-4, 6-1.

Swiatek's victory over Samsonova marked her 100th main-draw match at grand slams. Among players who started their careers in the Open Era, only six women have more wins in their first 100 major matches than Swiatek's 83. Monica Seles leads with 93 wins, followed by Chris Evert (90), Steffi Graf (87), Martina Hingis and Serena Williams (both 86), and Venus Williams (85).

Swiatek Eyes US Open Semi-Finals

Swiatek is also one of just four players in the last two decades to win 12 consecutive grand slam matches against WTA top-20 opponents. The others are Graf, Seles, and Serena Williams. Despite her success, Swiatek believes she can still improve as she prepares for her match against sixth seed Pegula.

"At the beginning, I felt like we were playing men's style, just holding our serves but I knew that if I kept pushing I may get some chances to break," Swiatek said. "That happened and I'm happy I was there to close the first set. Then I just wanted to keep being focused and not let my mind drift off. I'm happy with the whole performance. I'm feeling better and better every day."

The winner of Swiatek's match with Pegula will compete against either Karolina Muchova or Beatriz Haddad Maia for a spot in the final. Muchova upset Jasmine Paolini while Haddad Maia defeated Caroline Wozniacki.

Haddad Maia's Achievement

Haddad Maia's 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Wozniacki made her just the second South American woman to secure multiple US Open wins over former grand slam champions. She joins Argentina's Gabriela Sabatini in this achievement.

Swiatek needed just over an hour and a half to overcome Samsonova on Monday. This win adds to her impressive record of victories in grand slam matches.

The upcoming match between Swiatek and Pegula promises to be a thrilling encounter as both players aim for a place in the semi-finals.

Swiatek remains optimistic about her performance and continues to focus on improving with each match she plays.
