Swiatek To Face Sabalenka In Anticipated Cincinnati Open Semi-Final

Iga Swiatek overcame Mirra Andreeva to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Aryna Sabalenka. Swiatek's resilience and skill promise an exciting match.

Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the Cincinnati Open semi-finals after a hard-fought victory over Mirra Andreeva. The world number one bounced back from losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours. This sets up an exciting semi-final clash with Aryna Sabalenka.

In their first-ever encounter, Andreeva started strong by breaking Swiatek in the third game. She also saved two break points in the sixth and tenth games to take the first set. However, Swiatek responded by breaking Andreeva in the opening game of the second set, which was enough to level the match.

Swiatek vs Sabalenka in Semi-Final

The deciding set saw Swiatek break again. Andreeva had a chance to break back at 6-5 but sent a backhand long, allowing Swiatek to win the next two points and advance to the semi-finals.

Swiatek has now reached the highest percentage of WTA-1000 semi-finals since the format's introduction in 2009. She has made it to 17 out of 31 appearances, giving her a remarkable 54.8% success rate.

Matching her performance from last year in Cincinnati, where she lost in the semi-finals to Coco Gauff, Swiatek aims to go further this time. She has maintained a perfect quarter-final record in 2024, winning all ten matches at this stage.

Historical Achievement

With her latest victory, Swiatek achieved her 30th main-draw win at a WTA 1000 event this season. She joins Serena Williams as only the second player to reach this milestone in a single year; Williams achieved it with 36 wins in 2013.

Swiatek's only defeat at this stage came against Elena Rybakina by retirement in Rome last year. Her current record stands at an impressive 16-1 in WTA 1000 quarter-finals.

"54.8% - Iga Swiatek is the player with the highest percentage of WTA-1000 semi-finals reached since formats introduction in 2009 (54.8%, 17 in 31 appearances). Chief," tweeted OptaAce on August 17, 2024.

Swiatek's determination and skill have been evident throughout this season, and she continues to set new benchmarks in women's tennis. Fans eagerly await her upcoming match against Aryna Sabalenka, anticipating another thrilling contest.
