TV Presenter Issues On-Air Apology to Novak Djokovic for Controversial Comments During Australian Open

By MyKhel Staff

A prominent TV presenter issued an on-air apology on Monday to Novak Djokovic after making remarks about the 24-time Grand Slam champion and his Serbian fans during the Australian Open.

The incident arose after Djokovic skipped the customary on-court interview following his straight-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka on Rod Laver Arena, which secured his place in the quarter-finals on Sunday evening.

Djokovic explained his refusal to participate in the interview was a protest against Tony Jones, a prominent sports presenter with host broadcaster Channel Nine. The Serbian star accused Jones of making "insulting and offensive comments" toward him and his supporters and announced he would boycott interviews with the network until an apology was offered.

Addressing the situation, Jones said on Monday: "The comments were made on the news on the Friday night, which I considered to be banter. I considered it to be humour, which is consistent with most things I do," he stated.

"Having said that, I was made aware on Saturday morning, from Tennis Australia via the Djokovic camp, that the Djokovic camp was not happy at all with those comments. As such I immediately contacted the Djokovic camp and issued an apology to them -- 48 hours ago -- for any disrespect that Novak felt, that I had caused.

"As I stand here now, I can only stand by that apology to Novak."

The controversy stemmed from a live broadcast on Friday when Jones, reporting from Melbourne Park, encountered a group of Djokovic supporters waving Serbian flags and chanting behind him. Responding to the scene, Jones sang:
"Novak, he's overrated ... Novak's a has-been. Novak, kick him out."

In his apology, Jones also acknowledged that his remarks had offended Serbian fans.
"I should also say the disrespect was extended, in many ways, to the Serbian fans," he admitted.

"We have built up a nice rapport with the Serbian fans ... there is banter, and I thought what I was doing was an extension of that banter. Quite clearly that has not been interpreted that way.

"I feel as though I've let down the Serbian fans. It has been an unfortunate situation."

The Serbian tennis ace will next face Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
