New York, September 6: India's Rohan Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden of Australia breezed into the US Open 2023 men's doubles semi-final on Tuesday (September 5) night following straight sets win in New York, USA.

The Indo-Australian sixth seeded pair defeated American 15th seeded pair of Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 7-6(10), 6-1 in the quarterfinal clash that lasted an hour and 28 minutes.

Bopanna-Ebden pair, who had reached the Wimbledon semi-final earlier this year, reached the last 4 in the second successive grand slam as the pair saved seven set points in the opener before cruising through the second set to book a meeting with French pair of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Bopanna and Ebden faced their toughest test in the round of 16 in which they beat the all-British duo of Julian Cash and Henry Patten 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(6) to book a quarter-final berth.

Lammons and Withrow, on the other hand, reached the last eight after they knocked out the Wimbledon champions and top seeds Wesley Koohlof of the Netherlands and Neal Skupski of Great Britain in the round of 16.

The 43-year-old Bopanna and 35-year-old Ebden began their campaign at Flushing Meadows with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Australia's Christopher O'Connell and Aleksandar Vukic followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kazakh-Russian pair of Andrey Golubev and Roman Safiullin in the second round.

The Indo-Australian pair has won titles in Doha and Indian Wells this season while also reaching the finals in Rotterdam and Madrid. It is third in the race for the ATP Finals, a tournament to be held in Turin from November 12 to 19 where the top eight pairs of the year will compete.

Also, this will be Bopanna's third semi-final appearance in the US Open with his best finish coming back in 2010 when he finished runner up alongside partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan following defeat to the Bryan twins in the final.
