US Open 2023: Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden enter men's doubles quarter-finals

New York, September 4: India's Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden advanced to the men's doubles quarterfinals at the US Open 2023 with a hard-fought three-set win over British pair Julian Cash and Henry Patten on Sunday (September 3) night.

The sixth seeded Indo-Australian pair won 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(10-6) against the British duo of Cash and Patten after toiling hard for two hours 22 minutes in the third round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Bopanna and Ebden, who had reached the Wimbledon semifinals earlier this year, hit 13 aces and won 81 per cent of their first-serve points. The Indian-Australian duo will next face top seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski or Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow.

Earlier this year, Bopanna and Ebden had won titles on hard courts in Doha and Indian Wells. The Indo-Australia pair are currently fifth in ATP Rankings and aim to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

The furthest Bopanna has reached in the US Open is the final back in 2010, when he lost the title clash alongside partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan to the Bryan twins. He will hope to replicate that or even better that achievement this year.

The 43-year-old remains the only Indian in the fray in the men's doubles event after Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni made first round exits following defeats in their respective matches. Bhambri partnered Brazil's Marcelo Demoliner, while Myeni joined forces with Russian Aslan Karatsev.

Earlier, Bopanna had crashed out of the mixed doubles event in which he partnered Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi. The pair went down 2-6 5-7 to the American duo of Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend in the second round.
