US Open 2023: Top contenders in women's singles draw - Iga Swiatek and her competitors

By Abhishek Raj

It's that time of the year again. The last Grand Slam of the season is all set to make its presence felt in the land of Hollywood. The main draw of one of the most decorated tennis championships, US Open 2023 will kick-start from Monday (August 28).

Unlike men's tennis, where the power remains with a champion for a relatively longer period of time, the power keeps changing its keeper in women's tennis, especially since Serena Williams went past her prime.

This year alone, we have had six different 'winners and runner-ups' combined, in three different Grand Slams so far. Women's tennis championship is one of the most unpredictable things to exist in sport, today. But here we are, with our top three picks, who can give a strong shot at the singles championship title in the US Open 2023.

Iga Swiatek

Born on May 31, 2001, in Poland, Natalia Swiatek achieved the World No.1 ranking, just at the age of 21. Natalia's father, who himself is a former Olympian, wanted her to go into the field of athletics. To her father's liking, she did the same and started off with swimming, but did not continue it for long as she soon moved to tennis, following her sister, thanks to the tennis gods for that.

The US Open, French Open and a four times Grand Slam champion, Swiatek is undoubtedly the best contender to win the US Open 2023. The clay queen, winning the French Open thrice (2020, 2022 & 2023) in singles and once in doubles as a junior in 2018, is equally destructive on hard and green courts as well.

In May this year, she reached her first-ever Wimbledon quarterfinals. In June, she won WTA 250 and reached to the semifinals of the recently held Cincinnati Open. Her red-hot form, movement on the hard court and majestic backhands will be something to look out for in the US Open 2023.

Aryna Sabalenka

The next on our list is 25-year-old Belarusian, Aryana Sabalenka. She might not have won as many singles Majors as Swiatek but on her day, she is equally good, if not more. Another story of a tennis star starting her career because of her father, this time, by accident, though. One day, her father took her to a tennis court and she liked it so much that she ended up playing the game professionally.

The World No.2, former doubles World No.1 and the current Australian Open champion will enter the US Open 2023 as one of the biggest contenders. Aryana knows the feel of the US Open Championships as she won a doubles title in the same (2019).

She would be looking to turn the fortunes around in singles as she is coming on the back of two consecutive semifinal loses in Flushing Meadows and two semifinal defeats this year in French Open and Wimbledon, respectively. This has already been a good year for her, and another Major title would make it the best year of her career.

Ons Jabeur

This has to be the toughest choice to make but we are going with Ons Jabeur. Ons is the most experienced of the lot. However here is a change in story, unlike the other two mentioned, Jabeur was introduced to the game by her mother. The change in story doesn't end here, unlike the other two, she has not won any Grand Slam title, so far. Then why did we pick her as one of the top contenders?

The 2022 Madrid Open champion, Ons Jabeur is known to be one of the strongest female tennis players, going around. Yes, she has not won a big title as yet but looking at her current run of form, it is just a matter of time before she converts one.

In the last two years, she has played three Grand Slam finals, including last year's US Open. After her Wimbledon finals loss this year, she said, "We are going to make it one day. I promise." And this US Open could very much have that "one day" in store.
