US Open 2024: Former runner-up Ons Jabeur pulls out, shares emotional message

By Priyanka

World No. 17 Ons Jabeur from Tunisia has decided to pull out of the US Open 2024 due to her long-lasting shoulder injury. The former World No. 2 Jabeur earlier withdrew from the Summer Games in the French Capital to preserve her fitness and instead be a part of the US Open.

However, since her shoulder didn't recover in time, she decided to pull out of the prestigious competition and promised her fans and well-wishers that she would come back stronger whenever she hit full recovery.

Ons Jabeur

"Ons Jabeur has withdrawn from the women's singles event with an injury. Jabeur will be replaced by the next highest-ranked player eligible to be seeded, Elise Mertens. Mertens will become the #33 seed. Get well soon, @Ons_Jabeur," the official US Open X handle tweeted.

Interestingly, Ons Jabeur was runner-up to Iga Swiatek in the US Open 2022 in New York. After skipping the Olympics in Paris, she decided not to take part in the Washington WTA competition.

Though she took part in the Canada Open, she suffered a first-round exit against Naomi Osaka. Later, she pulled out of the Cincinnati Open in August. With Jabeur officially pulling out of the US Open 2024, her slot is now passed to Belgium's Elise Mertens. The Belgium player's stop will further move to a qualifier.

Right after pulling out of the US Open 2024, Ons Jabuer penned a heartfelt post to her wellwishers, stating about non recovery and requested everyone to pray for her speedy recovery.

"Dear All, I am truly sad to announce that my shoulder won't recover in time for the US Open. I feel I need to give 100 % and today its not possible yet. Life has ups and downs, but sometimes in the very negative moments we all need to find the positive in it. This year has been very tough for me, but I know somewhere the light is there. I keep smiling like I always do because I am grateful for my life, my family, my sponsors and the fans that have always supported me. Always grateful for the unconditional support YOU all bring to me," Jabeur wrote on Instagram.

"If you are reading this post and wanting to wish me a speedy recovery, I truly appreciate it and cherish it , And if you are here to question my choices and my team, please find a little kindness in your heart because you don't know what I have been going through for all these years. I promise once I get my strength back I will come back stronger," she concluded.
