Novak Djokovic began his campaign for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title in emphatic fashion, securing a straight-sets victory over Radu Albot in the opening round of the US Open 2024 on Monday.

The four-time US Open champion triumphed 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, setting a new milestone with his 78th victory on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium. This win not only marked a strong start to his quest for history but also underscored the remarkable longevity and resilience of the Serbian tennis star.

The match, which unfolded during Djokovic's 40th career night match at the tournament, saw him display the same intensity and skill that has made him one of the most formidable players in tennis history. Despite having lost his Australian and French Open titles earlier in the year, Djokovic appeared undeterred, showcasing his dominance against Albot, the 138th-ranked Moldovan qualifier who has never defeated a top-10 player.

Djokovic swiftly took control of the match, breaking Albot's serve early in the first set to establish a 3-2 lead. From there, he continued to exert pressure, breaking again in the third game of the second set. Although Albot briefly managed to level the score, Djokovic quickly reasserted his dominance, winning the next four games to secure a two-set advantage.

In the third set, Djokovic broke Albot's serve once more to lead 4-3, and he confidently closed out the match just before midnight, advancing to the next round as he inches closer to his historic 25th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic on his approach and mindset

Following the victory, Djokovic spoke with reporters about his enduring success and the factors that have contributed to his remarkable longevity in the sport. Djokovic was asked how, at 37 years old, he continues to move with the agility of a much younger player. Djokovic's response provided insight into the meticulous approach and mindset that have allowed him to remain at the pinnacle of tennis for so many years.

"There's not one word or secret that would describe it all. It's just a way of life. Way to approach my tennis career," Djokovic explained. He credited his early exposure to knowledgeable and passionate individuals who instilled in him the importance of long-term health and preparation. "I was fortunate very early on in my life to be surrounded by knowledgeable and passionate people who were kind enough to share their guidance with me for years and they taught me very early on that prevention equals longevity."

Djokovic emphasized the significance of a holistic approach to his career, one that balances both physical and mental well-being. "Stretching. Warm-up. Everything I do early on in my life will come back to me later in my career. The body is one part. The mentality and emotional, mental aspect is something on the other side. You've got to find the optimal balance between the two," he said.

Despite his achievements and the inevitable frustrations that come with the sport, Djokovic conveyed his enduring passion for tennis. "I'm still enjoying myself to compete. I'm very self-critical on the court. I get frustrated at times. At the end of the day, this sport gave me so much. Me continuing to play and giving 100% every time I step on the court is paying back to this wonderful sport," Djokovic reflected.

As Djokovic advances in the US Open, his focus will remain on his pursuit of a historic 25th Grand Slam title. However, his words after the match highlight not just his ambition, but the deep respect and love he holds for the sport that has defined his life. The combination of rigorous physical preparation, mental fortitude, and passion continues to drive Djokovic as he chases new milestones.
