US Open 2024: Tennis star Elena Rybakina splits up with coach days before Tournament - What is the Reason?

Elena Rybakina has announced the end of her five-year collaboration with coach Stefano Vukov just before the US Open. This decision comes days before the tournament at Flushing Meadows, where she aims to compete for the title.

Rybakina and Vukov began their partnership in 2019, achieving significant success together. She won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon two years ago and reached the Australian Open final last year, losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Rybakina's Announcement on Social Media

On Friday, Rybakina took to Instagram to confirm the split with Vukov, expressing gratitude for his service.

"Hello everyone, after five years Stefano and I are no longer working together. I thank him for his work on-court and wish him all the best for the future. Thank you all for the support," Rybakina said.

The 25-year-old player has faced a challenging lead-up to this year's final Grand Slam. Earlier this summer, she had to withdraw from both the Olympics and the Canadian Open due to bronchitis.

Elena Rybakina's Partnership with Vukov

Despite their achievements, Rybakina's relationship with Vukov was sometimes criticised. During last year's Australian Open, tennis legend Pam Shriver urged Rybakina to find a coach who would treat her with 'respect'.

"As I watch Rybakina try to win her second major in seven months, I hope she finds a coach who speaks and treats her with respect at all times and does not ever accept anything less," Shriver commented last year.

Rybakina defended Vukov against these criticisms, stating that those without insider knowledge should refrain from making judgments.

"Unlike people that are making these comments, he has great knowledge about me as a player and an athlete," said Rybakina. "I would never accept a coach that didn't respect me. Please disregard any fake news to the contrary."

The 25-year-old Kazakhstan player will be hoping to improve on her US Open record in the upcoming edition. Her best result in the US Open has been reaching the 3rd Round twice.
