US Open: Bhupathi loses final Grand Slam match, Sania crashes out

New York, Aug 31: Somdev Devvarman, who clinched a five-setter in the first round of the US Open, lost to 20th seed Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-7(8), 4-6, 5-7 in a match that lasted for nearly three hours.

In the mixed doubles, the pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Martina Hingis lost to Yung-Jan Chan and Robert Lindstedt in the first round. The duo lost 6-7(5), 6-7(5). It meant the end of Bhupathi's Grand Slam career for he is set to retire at the end of this year. He has already lost in the men's doubles section.

Rohan Bopanna, who won his first-round men's doubles match partnring France's Edouard Roger-Vassel, lost in the first round of the mixed doubles. The Indo-German duo of Bopanna and Julia Georges lost 7-6(1), 2-6, 6-10 to the American-Mexian duo of Abigail Spears and santiago Gonzalez.

Sania Mirza and her partner Horia Tecau of Romania lost 6-4, 6-7(10-12), 4-10 to the Lizel Huber-Marcelo Melo duo, seeded eighth.

Veteran Australian tennis star and former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt exhibited brilliance and grit to beat another former US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro in a five-setter. The scoreline read 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1. Hewitt, the champion of 2001, has had a injury-hit career.
