New york, Aug 27: Roger Federer is through to the second round of the US Open after a comfortable first-round win .

The Swiss star, who has recently lost his position as world number one to rival Rafael Nadal, beat Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez in just over one hour and 20 minutes. Elsewhere, Richard Gasquet is out of the competition after losing to Tommy Haas in five sets last night, while Nicolas Kiefer was forced to retire with injury in his match against Ivo Minar. There were also victories last night for Fernando Gonzalez, Marat Safin, Fernando Verdasco, Ivo Karlovic, Tommy Robredo, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Igor Andreev and Andreas Seppi.
