US Open: Wozniacki sends Sharapova back to Russia

By Abdul Nisar
New York, Sep 7: US Open top seed player Caroline Wozniacki defeated 2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round match on Monday, Sep 6.

The 2009 US Open runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki, thrashed the Russian beauty Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 to cruise to the quarterfinals to meet Slovakia"s Dominika Cibulkova. Wozniacki kept on getting the ball back into play, forcing her opponent to make mistakes. Sharapova made nine double faults and hit 36 unforced errors.

Though Sharapova struck double the number of Wozniacki"s winners, with 32 to 16, it was the errors that decided the result in the blue court in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I felt like I was playing well out there. I made Sharapova to do those errors," said Wozniacki, ranked number two in the world.

"I've improved a lot, not only physically, but also I believe in myself more. I believe I can do it. Also, I think I can mix up my game a little bit more," she added.

"Wozniacki is at the top of her game. When she had the opportunity to step in, she took it and went for her shots," said Sharapova after the match.
