Kolkata, Dec 22 (UNI) J. Vishnu Vardhan of Hyderabad bagged the double crown at the Indian Oil Servo National Grasscourt Tennis Championship.
After annexing the singles crown, he teamed up with Vinod Sridhar of Tamil Nadu to defeat N. Sriram Balaji and V.M. Ranjeet, both from TN, 6-2,7-6(9-7).
J. Vishnu Vardhan of Andhra Pradesh, the sixth seed here, shattered the Chennai Open Wild Card dreams of fourth seed Divij Sharan from Delhi. Vardhan took the title in 128 minutes in straight sets 6-3,6-4. Divij, who yesterday played the serve and volley game to perfection, seemed to have lost the script and rarely ventured to the net. Vardhan capitalised on the unforced errors of Divij.
The first serve percentage of Vardhan was 57% and that of Divij 52%. Vishnu Vardhan gets Rs.35,100 as winner's purse while Divij had to make do with Rs.24,300.
Top seed from Chennai, Rushmi Chakravarthi, an Indian Oil Corporation employee, proved her supremacy in the Ladies' circuit by beating Delhi's Shalini Sahoo in 87 minutes. Shalini started off in style breaking Rushmi in the second game and then retained her serve to take a lead of 3-0. It was a wake up call for Rushmi who pulled up her socks and took the next six games at a trot to take the set at 6-3 in 49 minutes.
Rushmi started coming to the net more often and unsettled the game plan of Shalini. Sixth game of the match saw Rushmi serving at 0-40 but her ventures to the net and powerful serves came to her rescue and she managed to save the game. In the set Rushmi fired three aces while Shalini had only one double fault to her credit.
Rushmi got Rs.23,400 and Shalini Rs.16,200.
