Who Is Nishesh Basavareddy? Indian-Origin Wildcard Stuns Taylor Fritz at French Open 2026
Nishesh Basavareddy produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening round at the French Open 2026 after the Indian-origin youngster knocked out seventh seed Taylor Fritz in Paris on Sunday.
The 21-year-old wildcard defeated his higher-ranked compatriot 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen to secure the biggest win of his professional career and reach the second round at Roland Garros for the first time.

Basavareddy displayed remarkable composure on his French Open main draw debut, recovering from a third-set setback to dominate the fourth and eliminate one of the tournament's leading seeds.
The victory is expected to further accelerate the rise of one of American tennis' most promising young talents.
Nishesh Basavareddy Indian roots and early tennis journey
Born in Newport Beach, California, in 2005, Basavareddy is the son of Indian immigrants Sai Prasanna and Muralikrishna Basavareddy, who hail from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.
His parents moved to the United States in 1999 before eventually settling in Indiana, where Nishesh and his elder brother Nishanth were introduced to tennis at a young age.
Under the guidance of coach Bryan Smith and former doubles world No. 1 Rajeev Ram, Basavareddy developed into one of the most highly rated junior prospects in the United States.
He climbed to No. 3 in the ITF junior rankings and won the boys' doubles title at the 2022 US Open alongside fellow American Ozan Baris.
His progress was interrupted by knee surgeries in 2016 and 2018, but the youngster successfully rebuilt his game and emerged as one of the brightest prospects on the Challenger circuit.
Rapid rise through the ATP ranks
Basavareddy enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2024, winning Challenger titles in Puerto Vallarta and Tiburon while reaching multiple finals.
His ranking jumped dramatically from outside the top 450 to inside the world's top 150 within a single season, highlighting his rapid development.
The American also qualified for the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals and announced his decision to turn professional after ending his collegiate career at Stanford University.
His rise continued in 2025.
Basavareddy reached his first ATP semifinal in Auckland and earned widespread praise after taking the opening set against Novak Djokovic during his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open.
The performances helped him break into the ATP Top 100 before making appearances in the main draws of Wimbledon and the US Open.
Statement win against Taylor Fritz at 2026 French Open
The French Open wildcard entered Roland Garros after winning the USTA's Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge and immediately justified his selection.
Against Fritz, Basavareddy mixed powerful baseline hitting with clever drop shots and changes of pace, repeatedly disrupting the seventh seed's rhythm.
He edged two tight tiebreaks to establish a commanding lead before eventually closing out the match in four sets.
"I knew I was playing at a high level," Basavareddy said after the victory.
"If I kept going, I'd have more chances, and I was able to come out strong in the beginning of the fourth set. That was the best set I think I've ever played."
The win marked Basavareddy's maiden victory over a Top-10 opponent and arguably the defining moment of his career so far.
What's next for Basavareddy
With Taylor Fritz eliminated, Basavareddy has suddenly become one of the stories of the opening week in Paris.
The Indian-origin youngster will next face either Alexander Shevchenko or Alex Michelsen for a place in the third round.
Regardless of how far he progresses at Roland Garros, his upset victory over Fritz has firmly established him as a player to watch on the ATP Tour and one of the most exciting young talents emerging in men's tennis.
