Wimbledon 2023: I am one of the best grass court players in world, only Djokovic more experienced: Andy Murray

Former world number one Andy Murray ahead of his first round Wimbledon 2023 match against compatriot Ryan Peniston has said that he considers himself as one of the best grass court players in the world.

The 36-year-old Englishman, who has won the Wimbledon title twice in his career (2013 and 2016), also pointed out that Novak Djokovic was the only more experienced player than him at this year's draw.

“I want to go out there and perform at a level that I'm happy with. I feel like I'm in a really good position to do that. I have the experience at this tournament. I've played on the big courts here more than most. There's only one player in the draw that has more experience of playing here than me, which is Novak,” Murray added.

“I believe I'm one of the best grass court players in the world, and I'm physically feeling really good. I have prepared well, so there's no reason I can't have a good tournament,” said Murray.

Further, the three-time Grand Slam champion added that he would give his best regardless of his mental and physical condition while entering the competition.

The former No. 1 followed up his win at Surbiton last week by beating Frenchman Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Nottingham Open.

The 36-year-old Murray withdrew from the French Open to prioritize Wimbledon, and has now won 10 straight matches on grass on the second-tier Challenger tour.

“Regardless of how I was feeling coming in, I would always do my best to be ready for this one. Even if there were some physical issues, niggles, I'd always give my best,” said Murray.

Murray won two grass-court titles on the ATP Challenger Tour last month. After winning at Surbiton, he defeated France's Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Nottingham Open. He withdrew from the French Open to prioritise Wimbledon. He has won 10 straight matches on grass.
