Wimbledon 2023: Swiatek to Rybakina – Top 5 Contenders For Women’s Singles Title

The Wimbledon 2023 main draw got underway on Monday (July 3) with the men's and women's singles first round matches at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.

The women's singles draw features former champions like two-time winner Petra Kvitova and reigning champion Elena Rybakina as well as top seeds like Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur among others.

Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka among favourites for Wimbledon 2023

Unlike the men's event which has been dominated by the same player in the past few editions, the women's singles event has seen six different winners in the past six editions. Only one champion among the past six winners will feature in 2023 edition. So, who will start favourite this year?

Top 5 Women's Singles Contenders in Wimbledon 2023

1. Elena Rybakina: Reigning champion and third seed starts as one of the favourite to defend her crown at the All England Club. She had a fairytale run last year, when she put away former champion Simona Halep in straight sets on her way to the title.

2. Iga Swiatek: The world number one has never crossed the pre-quarterfinals round at the All England Club in her three attempts so far, but her form in grand slams, having won the last three of five, makes her also a favourite to lift her maiden Wimbledon title.

3. Aryna Sabalenka: The second seed and Australian Open champion, who finished in the semifinal stages at Roland Garros, will look to better her last four finish at the All England Club, when she takes to the grass courts in Wimbledon and starts as one of the favourites.

4. Ons Jabeur: The last edition runner up, who starts the tournament as the sixth seed, will also be among the favourites to lift the title on July 11 at the All England Club. Like top seeds Caroline Garcia and Jessica Pegula, Jabeur will be expected to go past the fourth round in the tournament.

5. Petra Kvitova: The two-time champion, who is the ninth seed, will definitely be in the conversation when it comes to favourites to win the title at the All England Club. The 2011 and 2014 champion has already won on grass court last month and will take confidence from that win.

The others in the mix for the women's singles title will be Beatriz Hadsad Maia, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Belinda Bencic, Jelena Ostapenko and Ellise Mertens among others.
