Wimbledon: Swiatek books last 16 spot as Krejcikova's title defence ends

Iga Swiatek continued her strong start at Wimbledon with a comfortable third-round victory over Danielle Collins.

Swiatek won 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 17 minutes to secure her spot in the last 16, and is one win away from equalling her best result at the All England Club.

The Pole got off to a strong start as she broke Collins in the third game of the first set, and got a second shortly after as she stormed into the lead.

Collins failed to mount a comeback as she failed to hold her serve in the first game of the second set, giving Swiatek control of the match.

Swiatek secured the win with her first match point, and another break, to set up a fourth-round clash against Clara Tauson.

Tauson caused a shock in her third-round match after beating 11th seed Elena Rybakina 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

The Danish player edged Rybakina, who had the best record at Wimbledon (21-3) of any woman in the field, in a match that saw just one break point converted.

Elsewhere, defending champion Barbora Krejcikova lost 2-6 6-3 6-4 to Emma Navarro in a two-hour and 27-minute thriller.

Krejcikova had been in control during the first set as she cruised into the lead, but the 10th seed fought back, with a three-game winning streak forcing a decider.

Navarro then broke Krejcikova in three consecutive games in the final set as they traded breaks, but held on to serve for the win.

Despite not being as confident on grass courts, Swiatek showed her strengths as she broke Collins' serve four times while remaining unbroken herself (defended all three break points she faced).

It will now be the 19th round of 16 for Swiatek at a grand slam - the most of any woman since her major debut five years ago.

In fact, Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are the only two players able to reach the fourth round at each of the last four women's singles grand slam events (since the US Open 2024).
