Wimbledon: Sinner shrugs off injury and Shelton to reach semi-finals

Jannik Sinner overcame his elbow issue to dispatch Ben Shelton in straight sets and reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

World number one Sinner injured his elbow in his last-16 match against Grigor Dimitrov, which he looked set to lose until his opponent retired hurt.

Yet the Italian seemed largely untroubled as he claimed a resounding 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 victory over number 10 seed Shelton.

Having wrestled control of the first set tie-break, Sinner hit his stride in the second set.

A nip and tuck third set saw Shelton do his best to force the match on longer, but Sinner was simply too strong.

Shelton clawed back two match points on his own serve, with a ferocious forehand winner followed by a sizzling ace, yet Sinner did not let a third opportunity pass him by as the American went long.

Top seed Sinner is now just one win away from a fourth straight grand slam final.

The 23-year-old has already become the youngest man to reach the last four in four straight grand slam events since Rafael Nadal in 2009.

Sinner is also the fifth-youngest man to reach the semi-finals of three majors in consecutive seasons, older only than Jim Courier (1992-1993), Jimmy Connors (1974-1975), Novak Djokovic (2007-2008) and Roger Federer (2004-2005).
