When Smriti Irani fought with BBC for Sania Mirza

New Delhi, July 14: Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani was furious to find out a tweet from BBC India which forgot to mention Sania Mirza's name while breaking the news about Wimbledon victory on Twitter.

Sania Mirza created history after winning women's doubles Grand Slam trophy as she lifted the Wimbledon title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis. However, BBC India mentioned only Hingis's name while breaking the news on Twitter.

Smriti Irani and Sania Mirza

The first tweet BBC India read, "Hingis wins Wimbledon doubles final." This tweet irked Smriti Irani and she replied to BBC India tweeting, "So does Sania Mirza."

Soon after Irani's reply, BBC India did not waste time and corrected their previous tweet. The media house then tweeted, "India's Sania Mirza wins women's Wimbledon doubles with Martina Hingis (Correcting earlier tweet - apologies!)"

Irani was not the sole person who was upset with BBC India's first tweet. Many people on Twitter called the media house racial. However, BBC India once again tweeted that the first tweet was an automated tweet.

"It was an automated tweet, which we corrected and apologised for (sic)," BBC India said in another tweet.

Sania and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis were seeded top but were pushed to the brink by second-seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina before prevailing 5-7 7-6 (4) 7-5 in a thrilling final in London.
