Zheng Qinwen Shocks Iga Swiatek With Straight Sets Victory To Enter Olympic Final

Zheng Qinwen achieved a stunning victory over world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets, reaching the Olympic Games final. This marks her first win against Swiatek, showcasing an aggressive approach that overturned expectations. Zheng's triumph also makes her the first Asian-born player to reach an Olympic singles final.

Zheng Qinwen achieved a significant victory by defeating world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets to advance to the Olympic Games final. The sixth seed secured a 6-2, 7-5 win on Court Philippe Chatrier in one hour and 50 minutes, marking her first triumph over Swiatek.

Swiatek had been the favourite for the gold medal, boasting a 20-match winning streak on clay leading up to the semi-finals. She had also remained unbeaten at Roland-Garros for 1,149 days, with 25 consecutive match wins and a 47-4 completed sets record during that period. However, Zheng's performance on Thursday ended Swiatek's dominance.

Zheng Shocks Swiatek, Enters Final

Zheng's victory is historic as she becomes the first Asian-born player to reach a Women's or Men's Singles final at the Olympics. Additionally, she is the first to defeat the WTA's number one on clay since rankings began in 1975.

An early break from each player saw them level at 2-2 in the first set. Swiatek then lost her next two serves, allowing Zheng to capitalise on her errors and take the first set after winning four consecutive games.

The second set saw Swiatek initially dominate, racing to a 4-0 lead. However, Zheng's aggressive play helped her claw back to level at 4-4. Despite Swiatek edging ahead again, she couldn't maintain her lead as Zheng won the final three games to secure her place in the final.

Zheng will face either Croatia's Donna Vekic or Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova for the gold medal. Meanwhile, Swiatek still has a chance to compete for bronze.

Despite her recent matches lasting three hours each, Zheng showed no signs of fatigue against Swiatek. Her intent was clear from the start as she took advantage of Swiatek's uncharacteristic mistakes.

This victory marks Zheng’s first win over Swiatek in their seven meetings. The reigning French Open champion struggled against Zheng’s aggressive approach and ultimately could not find answers to secure her place in the final.

The upcoming final promises an exciting match as Zheng aims for gold against either Vekic or Schmiedlova. This achievement highlights Zheng’s remarkable journey and potential future successes in tennis.
