Tullstar pursued a degree in Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She trains at Loughborough University, balancing pool sessions, strength and conditioning, physio, and soft tissue recovery. Her training also includes frame running to support cardiovascular fitness.
Tullstar's career has not been without its challenges. She broke her left wrist in 2023 and was in a cast until October. Earlier that year, she suffered a head injury leading to post-concussion syndrome. In 2018, she underwent bilateral shoulder surgery but recovered to win two gold medals at the 2019 World Championships.
Her accolades include being named MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours list and receiving the Disability Award at the 2019 Pride of Sport Awards. In 2015, she was named England's ASA Para swimming Performance Athlete of the Year and Para swimming Emerging Athlete of the Year.
Tullstar tried frame running for the first time in 2018 and has since competed in Para athletics. She has also set up a frame running club for young people in Loughborough. "Seeing how much impact frame running has on young kids who cannot walk is just an amazing experience," she said.
Beyond her athletic pursuits, Tullstar is a patron of the Dystonia Society and a sporting ambassador for Cerebral Palsy Sport. She volunteered at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, gaining new insights into the behind-the-scenes efforts required to run major events.
Looking ahead, Tullstar aims to compete at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Her dedication to both her sport and community initiatives continues to inspire many, proving that determination can overcome any obstacle.
