Aman Sehrawat Clinches Bronze at Paris Olympics on his debut, takes India's medal tally to 6

By MyKhel Staff

Aman Sehrawat capped off his debut at the Paris Olympics with a remarkable victory, securing a bronze medal in the men's 57kg wrestling category. In a thrilling and high-paced match against Puerto Rico's Darian Cruz, the 21-year-old wrestler from Chhatrasal Stadium displayed exceptional skill and resilience to win 13-5.

This was India's first medal in wrestling after Vinesh Phogat was controversially disqualified from her gold medal match a couple of days ago. Aman was also India's men's wrestler at the Paris Olympics.

The match began with Cruz taking the first point through a long single-leg hold, but Aman quickly responded, pushing Cruz out of the playing area twice and scoring two single-leg takedowns. This gave Aman a 6-3 lead at the end of the first half, with the young Indian wrestler growing in confidence.

As the second half commenced, Cruz made an aggressive start, scoring three points through a takedown and reversal. However, Aman maintained his composure and pulled ahead with another takedown. His relentless attacks and strategic play allowed him to widen the gap further with additional takedowns and a pushout, ultimately sealing the victory with a score of 13-5.

Aman's journey to the bronze medal was nothing short of impressive. He began his Olympic campaign with dominant victories, including a 10-0 win over Macedonia's Vladimir Egorov in the pre-quarterfinals and a 12-0 triumph over Albania's Zelimkhan Abakarov in the quarterfinals. However, his progress to the final was halted by Rio Olympics silver medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan, who defeated him 10-0 in the semifinals.

Despite the setback, Aman showcased his resilience and determination in the bronze medal match, earning India its sixth medal at the Paris Olympics. His achievement adds to the legacy of Chhatrasal Stadium, a renowned wrestling hub in East Delhi, which has produced Olympic medallists like Sushil Kumar, Bajrang Punia, and Ravi Kumar Dahiya.

Aman's victory is a testament to his hard work and the strong wrestling tradition of his akhada. For a young athlete who has overcome significant personal challenges, including the loss of both parents at a young age, this bronze medal represents not just a victory on the mat, but a triumph of spirit and perseverance. The entire nation, especially the Chhatrasal community, is undoubtedly celebrating this momentous achievement.
