Note: The final entry list is subject to Ad-hoc Committee's decision
The wrestling trials are taking place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on July 22-23 after the Asian Olympic body (OCA) granted IOA a week extension on the deadline of July 15 to send the entry list of the participant.
The extension was granted under special circumstances as the Wrestling Federation of India was suspended after sexual harassment allegations against its top brass. The Ad-hoc Committee, appointed by Indian Olympic Association (IOA), are currently in charge of the day-to-day affairs of the WFI until the wrestling body hosts its election.
As far as the wrestling trials are concerned, elite wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat were handed direct entry after the duo sought additional time to prepare for the trials. The rest of the categories saw winners of the trials take the Asian Games participation berth while the runners-up were named the standby.
The ad-hoc committee earlier suggested one-bout special trials in their respective weight categories (women's 53 kg and men's 65 kg) in August. However, OCA's refusal of granting the entry list deadline extension of more than a week meant the panel came up with the decision of granting exemption to Bajrang and Vinesh from the trials on the grounds of their performance in the last year.
