Asian Games 2026: Aman Sehrawat Wins Wrestling Gold After Dramatic Comeback

Aman Sehrawat produced a dramatic late fightback to defeat North Korea's Han Chong Song and win the men's freestyle 57kg gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday.

Asian Games

The Indian wrestler appeared to be in control after building a 6-1 lead, only for Han to turn the final on its head with a burst of attacking wrestling that put him 7-6 ahead. Sehrawat responded when it mattered most, executing a four-point move before adding another point after North Korea's unsuccessful challenge to close out the victory.

The gold is India's second wrestling title at the Games, coming a day after Sujeet Kalkal's triumph in the men's 65kg freestyle category.

Aman Sehrawat takes control early

Han began the final aggressively, repeatedly targeting Sehrawat's left leg and looking for an early opening. The Indian, however, defended the attacks effectively and remained composed through the opening exchanges.

Sehrawat then broke the deadlock after being put on a passivity warning. He responded inside the allotted period with a takedown for two points to move 2-0 ahead.

There was some confusion over the scoring before the officials reviewed the sequence, but Sehrawat retained his advantage and continued to dictate the exchanges.

He added another two points with a well-timed takedown before the interval, taking a 4-1 lead into the second period.

Han turns the final around

Sehrawat extended his advantage to 6-1 with another calculated attacking move, putting himself in a strong position with the gold within reach.

Han, however, refused to let the contest slip away.

The North Korean launched a sustained attacking spell, scoring a takedown before rolling Sehrawat for two more points. The momentum shifted rapidly as Han continued to find openings, transforming Sehrawat's five-point advantage into a 7-6 deficit.

The Indian wrestler was suddenly under pressure and needed a response of his own.

Four-point move seals Asian Games gold

Sehrawat found it at precisely the right moment.

He secured a takedown and then completed a roll, earning four points from the sequence to move back in front at 10-7.

Han challenged the call in an attempt to overturn the scoring, but the challenge was unsuccessful, handing Sehrawat another point and stretching the Indian's advantage to 11-7.

From there, Sehrawat managed the closing exchanges intelligently, defending Han's attempts to launch another comeback and holding on until the final whistle.

The victory secured Sehrawat's first Asian Games gold and gave India their second wrestling title of the 2026 Games.

After Sujeet Kalkal's gold in the 65kg category on Thursday, Sehrawat's triumph gives India back-to-back wrestling titles and another significant addition to their medal haul in Aichi-Nagoya.
