From Balali to the World Stage: Neha Sangwan Emerges as India’s Latest Wrestling Prodigy

By Rishab VM

In the heart of Balali, Haryana, where wrestling greatness seems to run through the veins of its people, a new star has risen. Neha Sangwan, a 16-year-old wrestler, has made her mark on the global stage by clinching the Under-17 World Championship title in the 57 kg category.

Her victory, a 10-0 triumph over Japan’s So Tsutsui in Amman, Jordan, is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the inspiration drawn from her village’s most famous daughter, Vinesh Phogat.

A Victory Inspired by Vinesh Phogat

“It’s a huge thing for me and this title is for Vinesh didi and all the women wrestlers. Vinesh didi remains an inspiration for us all and this world title will inspire the women wrestlers back in Balali village as well India too,” Neha said after her historic win, as reported by The Indian Express.

Her words reflect the deep respect and admiration she holds for Vinesh, who, just a week earlier, was welcomed back to Balali with a grand celebration after her return from the Paris Olympics. Although Vinesh missed out on an Olympic medal due to a weigh-in mishap, her influence on the next generation of wrestlers remains unshaken.

On the night of Vinesh’s return, Neha stayed up late into the night, preparing a garland made of currency notes to honor her idol. As Vinesh addressed the crowd, she expressed her desire to see more women wrestlers from Balali make their mark on the world stage. Little did she know that within days, Neha would fulfill that wish.

Neha’s father, Amit Kumar Sangwan, could hardly contain his pride. "Neha had spent the whole afternoon getting the garland made for Vinesh’s welcome last week. When she had gone on stage, Vinesh would tell her that girls like her should complete her dream. To see Neha win her first world title would have made Vinesh happy too today. It’s a special feeling for the whole of Balali village too," he said.

The Journey from Jhojhu Kalan to World Champion

Neha’s journey in wrestling began in 2016 when her father enrolled her in the academy run by coach Mahavir Phogat in the nearby village of Jhojhu Kalan. Her talent was evident early on, with victories in junior national competitions and a state championship in Haryana. However, it was under the guidance of coach Sajan Singh Mandola at the Krishan akhada that Neha’s potential was truly realized. Her father would dutifully drop her off at the akhada twice a day on his scooter, supporting her every step of the way.

Coach Mandola identified Neha’s need to improve her defense, which had previously been a weak point. "She had the instinct to attack but then the opponents would take advantage of her weak defense. So I had to make her quicker on the mat," Mandola explained.

He implemented a rigorous training regimen, including running in the fields to build stamina and practicing against lower-weight category wrestlers to enhance her speed and agility. Over time, Neha mastered these techniques, turning her weaknesses into strengths.

Last week, at a ceremony honoring Vinesh, Neha expressed her deep admiration for the Olympian. "Vinesh didi has gone where no other wrestler from the village has achieved. For us, the Olympic gold was hers and that’s what we want to tell her. If we can emulate her even in a small way, we would be glad. Didi met us before the Olympics and told us that every single one of us should dream about the Olympics. That’s what will keep us going and she remains synonymous with the Olympics for us," she said.

Rising Through the Ranks: From Asian to World Champion

Neha’s ascent in the wrestling world has been nothing short of remarkable. Two years ago, she captured the Asian Under-15 title in the 54 kg category. She followed this with a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in Turkey. Earlier this year, she claimed the title in the Asian U-17 Wrestling Championship in Jordan, setting the stage for her world title victory.

In the semifinals, Neha showcased her skill with a 10-6 win over Kazakhstan’s Anna Stratan. Coach Mandola highlighted Neha’s proficiency in various wrestling techniques, such as the Lohkan, Dhobi, Delni, and Bharandaj moves, which she executed flawlessly during the competition. "She is a quick learner and this world title will help her mentally too," the coach remarked.

Neha’s success has brought immense pride to her family, especially her father Amit and mother Mujni Devi. However, the joy extends beyond the immediate family. Neha’s grandfather, a former national-level wrestler, has been a steadfast supporter of her dreams, making this victory a moment of collective celebration for the entire Sangwan family.

As Neha Sangwan steps into the spotlight, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of Balali village, much like her mentor Vinesh Phogat. Her story is one of dedication and the power of inspiration, proving that the legacy of wrestling greatness in Balali is far from over.
