ONE Fight Night 40: Carrillo Claims Interim Crown, Keeps Promise to Wife

By MyKhel Team

Dreams don't always come with a clear timeline, but when they arrive, the sweetness is undeniable. Nico Carrillo realized his title ambitions at ONE Fight Night 40 on 14 February, dominating Shadow Mavinn over five rounds to claim the ONE Interim Featherweight Muay Thai World Title via unanimous decision.

The 27-year-old Scottish knockout artist demonstrated poise from the opening bell, weathering Shadow's strong start before seizing control of the bout. The pivotal moment arrived in the fourth round when Carrillo dropped the Thai star with a thunderous right hand, scoring the fight's only knockdown.

The victory improved Carrillo's ONE Championship record to 7-1 and his career mark to an impressive 30-4. More importantly, it sets up a unification showdown against reigning champion Tawanchai PK Saenchai, who is currently injured.

For Carrillo, holding 26-pound gold represents the culmination of years of visualization and sacrifice. The Scottish striker had long pictured this moment, and seeing it materialize brought both relief and satisfaction.

"It feels good. It feels like reality now. I've pictured this for so long, so it's nice for that to come true. I focused on not going for the finish straight away. If it came, it came. But we trained for five rounds," Carrillo said.

The disciplined approach paid dividends as Carrillo picked apart the 26-year-old Shadow, who refused to wilt despite facing relentless pressure. The Thai's durability and heart earned Carrillo's respect, elevating his opinion of Shadow both inside and outside the ring.

"I was actually quite surprised. I think he really, really tried 100 percent to stand there with me. So, hats off to him. As a person, I've always liked him, and he's a great person. But now, as a fighter, I think he's hard as nails," he said.

Beyond the glory, Carrillo's victory carried deeply personal significance. The Scotsman had promised his wife that success in combat sports would transform their lives, allowing her to leave her job and enjoy financial freedom.

"It's been a dream of mine to have my wife here. I told my wife, one day I'm going to take her out of her job so she wouldn't have to work anymore. And that was the dream today, one day, and it came true," Carrillo said.
