Paris Olympics: How Wrestlers Lose So Much Weight Overnight?

By Tracking Paris

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the dramatic weight-cutting process has become a focal point of discussion, particularly following the controversy surrounding Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Just hours before her gold medal match in the women's 50 kg category, Phogat was disqualified for being slightly over the weight limit, a decision that shocked Indian fans and highlighted the intense pressure athletes face in meeting strict weight requirements.

The story of wrestlers shedding significant weight overnight is a testament to their physical and mental endurance. Wrestlers like Aman Sehrawat, who competed in the 57-kg freestyle wrestling category, must often undergo rapid and rigorous weight loss to qualify for their weight classes. This process is fraught with challenges, as evidenced by Phogat's disqualification and the subsequent scramble by other wrestlers to avoid similar fates.

Aman Sehrawat's Overnight Weight Loss

For Sehrawat, the journey to the bronze medal was marked by an intense weight-cutting regimen. After his semi-final bout, he faced the daunting task of shedding 4.5 kg overnight to qualify for the 57-kg category for the bronze medal match.

The process began with an exhaustive 1.5-hour mat session focused on intense wrestling to initiate the weight-cutting process. This was followed by a hot bath to induce further sweating.

The night was spent in relentless efforts, including an hour of running on the treadmill to promote sweating and further weight loss. After a brief rest, Sehrawat went through five 5-minute sauna sessions to sweat out the remaining weight. Despite these efforts, he was still 900 grams over the limit, prompting additional measures such as massage and light jogging.

"Keeping that incident (Vinesh Phogat disqualification) in mind, as soon as Aman's semi-final bout ended, we were with him all night in the gym, sauna bath... Then, from 12:30 AM to almost 4:00 AM, we did multiple sessions with him, including treadmill, sparring partner, sauna bath, and much more. He was weighing 61.5kg after the semi-final, but we reduced the 4.5kg the whole night," said Virender Dahiya to Rev Sportz.

Hydration and Recovery

Throughout this process, careful management of hydration was crucial. Sehrawat consumed lukewarm water with lemon and honey, while avoiding excessive fluid intake to prevent water retention.

In the final hours before the weigh-in, Sehrawat completed five 15-minute running sessions. By 4:30 am, after hours of intense effort, he weighed in at 56.9 kg-just 100 grams below the limit. This successful weight cut allowed him to compete and eventually secure a bronze medal.

For those who navigate the intense weight-cutting process successfully, the focus shifts to recovery and preparation for their matches. The ordeal faced by Sehrawat underscores the extreme lengths wrestlers go to meet weight requirements and the high stakes involved in their sport.

The Vinesh Phogat controversy serves as a stark reminder of the pressures and challenges faced by athletes in their quest for Olympic glory, adding an emotional layer to the already grueling demands of competitive wrestling.
