UWW Issues Stern Warning Over Indian Wrestling Federation's Autonomy

In a significant move that could impact Indian wrestling deeply, UWW, the international governing body for the sport, has issued a stern warning to India. UWW's President, Nenad Lalovic, expressed concerns over political interference in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), emphasizing the necessity for the federation's autonomy.

Lalovic highlighted that the federation's independence is crucial for its operations and representation in international wrestling affairs. He pointed out that any public or political intrusion, except for overseeing the allocation of public grants, is unacceptable. This stance is rooted in the principles outlined in the UWW Constitution and the Olympic Charter.

The WFI found itself in a precarious position when the Sports Ministry suspended it shortly after its election in December 2023. The suspension led to a legal challenge by wrestler Satyawart Kadian, who questioned the federation's authority to select national teams. This legal and administrative turmoil almost cost Indian wrestlers their participation in the World Championship.

The uncertainty lingered until the ministry decided to review the suspension, following both a court directive to clarify its position and the court's decision to reinstate an ad-hoc panel—which the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) decided not to follow.

Amidst these developments, the government even involved WFI President Sanjay Singh in discussions as the federation's authorised representative.

Nenad Lalovic, in a letter addressed to WFI President Sanjay Singh on Thursday, reaffirmed UWW’s stance, recognizing the WFI as the sole entity responsible for the sport's governance in India on the international stage.

He reiterated the federation's autonomy as a fundamental principle that must be strictly adhered to, warning that any breach could lead to suspension. Such a suspension would prevent Indian wrestlers from participating in international competitions, marking a significant setback for the sport in the country.

The threat of suspension comes amid ongoing issues within the WFI, including the suspension of national wrestling camps due to the ministry's actions.
