Indian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have been at the center of speculation about their potential entry into politics, following a high-profile meeting with the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.
The meeting took place on Wednesday (September 4), and a picture of the encounter has since surfaced, further fueling rumors that Vinesh Phogat may be preparing to contest the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections on a Congress ticket.

The Congress party is expected to provide clarity on Vinesh Phogat's possible candidacy. This follows a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Central Election Committee on Monday (September 2).
During Monday's meeting, the focus was on convincing the ace wrestler to enter the electoral fray. Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda has reportedly been in touch with Phogat, and discussions were held with Rahul Gandhi as part of these efforts.
The speculation surrounding Vinesh Phogat's political ambitions has been intensifying, particularly after her recent participation in protests alongside farmers at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana.
During these protests, Phogat urged the central government to address the farmers' demands and prioritize resolving their issues. This active involvement in social causes has led many to believe that Phogat is seriously considering a shift from wrestling to politics.
After the Congress Central Election Committee meeting, AICC in-charge of Haryana Deepak Babaria stated that the party's list of candidates for the Haryana polls would be released within two days.
He added, "The party will clarify about Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday whether she fights the Haryana election on a Congress ticket or not." (As quoted by ANI) Babaria also mentioned that the party had discussed 49 seats, with 34 already declared.
The remaining 15 seats have been sent for review, and the final decisions are expected within the next few days. Vinesh Phogat's potential entry into politics comes after a challenging period in her wrestling career.
At the Paris Olympics, she was disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout after being found 100 grams overweight. Following this, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her petition to be awarded a joint silver medal.
A day after her disqualification, on August 8, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling, leading to intense speculation that she might follow in the footsteps of her cousin, Babita Phogat, who is a BJP MLA, and enter active politics.
The meeting between Bajrang Punia and Rahul Gandhi has also sparked discussions about Punia's potential political future. Punia may be considering starting his political journey with the Congress party.
With the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5, the timing of this meeting has raised eyebrows, and many are now wondering if Punia, like Phogat, will enter the electoral arena.
The upcoming Haryana elections will be held in a single phase on October 5, with the counting of votes taking place on October 8. The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently revised the polling day for Haryana from October 1 to October 5 and moved the vote counting date from October 4 to October 8.
As the election date draws nearer, the political landscape in Haryana is becoming increasingly dynamic, with Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia potentially becoming key figures in the upcoming contest.
The coming days will be crucial in determining whether these wrestling champions will indeed transition from sports to politics, and if they do, what impact their candidacies will have on the Haryana Assembly elections.
