Vinesh Phogat CAS Ruling Postponed on Paris Olympics Disqualification; Decision Extended till August 13

By MyKhel Staff

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has postponed the announcement of its decision regarding Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal for disqualification from the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics.

Initially scheduled for August 10, 2024, the ruling will now be delivered by IST on August 13, 2024. This extension was granted by the CAS ad hoc division, with sole arbitrator hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett overseeing the case. The reasoned order, which will detail the decision, is expected to be issued at a later date.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing

Vinesh Phogat's case has become a focal point during the ongoing Paris Olympics, following her disqualification from the gold medal match. Phogat, who had successfully reached the final round, was disqualified for being approximately 100 grams over the 50 kg weight limit. Despite her disqualification, Phogat and her team have been pressing for a joint silver medal, arguing that the minor weight discrepancy should not negate her performance.

The case has sparked significant interest and speculation, particularly after reports emerged suggesting that the CAS might extend the deadline for its decision. The court's extension has only added to the tension, as billions of fans and supporters in India await the final verdict.

Vinesh Phogat gained international support too as renowned American wrestler Jordan Burroughs, a six-time World Champion and Olympic gold medalist, has been vocal in his support, advocating for Phogat to be awarded a silver medal. He has also emphasised the need for the Olympic Committee to consider additional weight divisions in wrestling, a sentiment echoed by many in the wrestling community.

The possibility of awarding two silver medals in the same category has been a topic of debate. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has expressed reservations about such a scenario, stating that the regulations of the International Federation must be followed. However, Bach has also indicated that the IOC will ultimately abide by the CAS ruling, whatever it may be.

The hearing on Phogat's appeal, which lasted over three hours, concluded on August 10, leaving the wrestling world in suspense. As the extended deadline approaches, all eyes remain on CAS, with the final decision poised to have significant implications for both Vinesh Phogat and the broader wrestling community. The outcome could set a precedent for future cases involving similar disputes, making this a landmark moment in the sport.
