Vinesh Phogat kept waiting as CAS defers silver medal verdict to August 16

By Priyanka

Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has to wait for some more time as the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has further delayed the verdict of the wrestler's silver medal plea till Friday, August 16.

Notably, this is the third time the ad hoc committee delayed the verdict. The verdict was supposed to be issued on Tuesday, August 13 at 9:30 PM IST but was officially deferred to a new date.

Notably, the 29-year-old wrestler suffered disqualification ahead of her final bout at the Paris Olympics 2024 after being found 100 grams overweight than the permissible weight limit during the weigh-in window on the second day.

Interestingly, on the first day of her bouts, she weighed 49.90 kg to stay well within the permissible limit. On the first day of her campaign in Paris, she stunned the World No. 1 wrestler from Japan Yui Susaki by 3-2 to make the cut for the quarter-final bout.

In the quarter-final, she defeated Ukraine's Oksana Livach by 7-5 to comfortably move to the semi-final. In the semis, she bagged a convincing win against Cuba's Guzman Lopez by 5-0 to become the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the final at the Games.

Though wrestlers get a 30-minute window for weigh-ins on the first day to be within the permissible limits, they will be given only 15 minutes on the second if they make the cut for the final.
Vinesh Phogat made two appeals after her disqualification
It's worth noting that Vinesh Phogat made two appeals in front of the CAS right after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. While the first one was to let her participate in the final bout, the second was to be awarded a joint silver medal along with the losing finalist.

However, CAS denied the first appeal and accepted her second for hearing. Though they were expected to make the final decision by the end of the Olympics, they stated the time limit can be extended in exceptional circumstances.

USA's Sarah Hilderbrant went on to clinch the gold medal after a 3-0 win against Cuba's Guzman Lopez, who bagged the silver medal. Japan's Yui Susaki and China's Ziqi Feng settled for bronze medals.
