Why WFI Accused Vinesh Phogat of “National Embarrassment” and When She Can Return to Wrestling

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been declared ineligible to compete in domestic wrestling events until June 26, 2026 after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) issued her a detailed show-cause notice accusing her of indiscipline, anti-doping rule violations and conduct that allegedly brought "national embarrassment" to Indian wrestling.

The latest development effectively blocks Vinesh's planned comeback at the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, which was scheduled to mark her return to competitive wrestling after reversing her retirement decision following the Paris Olympics 2024 controversy.

Why has WFI barred Vinesh Phogat from competing?

According to the WFI notice, Vinesh failed to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required under United World Wrestling (UWW) Anti-Doping Rules for athletes returning from retirement.

The federation stated that any athlete making a comeback after retirement must formally comply with anti-doping return protocols before becoming eligible for competition again.

Because that process was allegedly not completed, WFI ruled Vinesh ineligible to participate in domestic tournaments until June 26, 2026.

The federation also claimed it must first ensure that no anti-doping rule violation exists before allowing her to compete again.

WFI accuses Vinesh of "damaging the image" of Indian wrestling

In the 15-page notice, WFI accused the star wrestler of:

  1. violating provisions of the WFI Constitution
  2. breaching UWW International Wrestling Rules
  3. committing anti-doping-related violations
  4. causing "national embarrassment"
  5. damaging the reputation of Indian wrestling

The notice reportedly raises four major charges against Vinesh.

One of the central points relates to her controversial disqualification at the Paris Olympics 2024 after failing the weight cut before her gold medal bout.

The federation has also referenced alleged whereabouts failures linked to anti-doping compliance, as well as her participation in two separate weight divisions during the March 2024 selection trials that were conducted under the IOA-appointed ad-hoc committee.

Vinesh Phogat had earlier accused WFI of blocking her comeback

The latest action escalates the already tense standoff between Vinesh and the Wrestling Federation of India.

Earlier this month, Vinesh publicly claimed that WFI was deliberately trying to stop her return to competitive wrestling after she initially faced issues registering for the National Open Ranking Tournament.

Although her registration was eventually processed on the final day, the dispute between both sides continued to intensify.

The federation had also recently made Vinesh ineligible for the Asian Games 2026 selection trials after introducing new eligibility rules restricting participation to medal winners from domestic events held during 2025 and 2026.

Because Vinesh has not competed professionally since the Paris Olympics controversy, those revised criteria effectively blocked her pathway back into the national setup.

Vinesh now has 14 days to respond

The WFI has reportedly given Vinesh 14 days to respond to the allegations outlined in the notice.

The case now adds another chapter to the prolonged conflict between one of India's biggest wrestling stars and the federation, a relationship that has remained strained ever since the protests against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and the fallout from the Paris Olympics 2024 episode.

With her comeback officially halted for now, uncertainty continues to surround Vinesh's wrestling future heading into the Asian Games and the next Olympic cycle.
