Maharashtra Kesari Sikandar Shaikh Receives Backing in Pursuit of International Glory for India

Pune, Mar 14: Wrestler Sikandar Shaikh, a renowned recipient of the Maharashtra Kesari title, is diligently striving to leave his mark on the national and international stages following his triumphs in his home state's akhadas.

At the age of 24, Sikandar secured the U-23 Nationals gold medal in 2019 and is now receiving support from the Punit Balan Group (PBG) to fuel his aspirations of Olympic success.

He is also intent on securing a place in the Indian team for upcoming international tournaments, with a keen focus on the 2026 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

Hailing from Solapur, Sikandar comes from a lineage deeply rooted in wrestling, with both his father and grandfather achieving notable success in the sport. Commencing his wrestling journey at the age of 14, Sikandar has been honing his skills at the Gandwish Talim in Kolhapur.

Expressing gratitude for the support extended by the Punit Balan Group, Sikandar remarked, "I am immensely grateful to Punit sir and his team for their assistance in realizing my ambition of clinching medals on the international stage. This financial backing will facilitate access to quality training and enable my participation in competitions."

Under the sponsorship of PBG, Sikandar will receive initial support of ₹15 lakh per annum for the next three years, covering his training expenses and other necessities. He aims to showcase his prowess in various national and international tournaments.

Chairman and Managing Director of PBG, Punit Balan, shared insights into the decision to endorse Sikandar, stating, "Wrestling holds immense popularity in Maharashtra and has produced numerous international luminaries, including independent India's inaugural individual Olympics medallist, Khashaba Jadhav."

"Punit Balan Group is dedicated to offering vital support to Indian athletes, facilitating their professional growth and contribution to the nation's medal tally. Sikandar Shaikh possesses exceptional talent and has the potential to secure medals for India on the global stage. With our backing, I am confident he can realize all his aspirations."

Aligned with its commitment to fostering excellence and advancement, PBG has been actively supporting nearly 60 talented athletes across various sports disciplines, including tennis player Rutuja Bhosale, para-badminton star Arati Patil, cricketer Ankit Bawne, and emerging archer Vaishnavi Pawar, among others.
