Wrestlers' Protest: Delhi Police deletes tweet after denying claims of clean chit to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

By MyKhel Staff

With the wrestlers' protest set for a Mahapanchayat on Thursday (June 1), Delhi Police stirred confusion on Wednesday night as Delhi Police deleted its tweets that denied media reports claiming that former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is given clean chit on sexual harassment charges.

Earlier, media agencies claimed that Delhi Police is all set to give Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh give clean chit as they haven't found sufficient evidence to arrest the BJP MP and are likely to file either a chargesheet or a final report in court in 15 days.

However, Delhi Police posted a series of posts on Twitter to deny such claims. However, a few hours later the tweets were deleted, creating a lot of confusion as their tweets made rounds in the social media by then.

The now-deleted tweet read, "Several media channels are running a story that the Delhi Police hasn't found sufficient evidence in the cases registered against the Ex-President of WFI and a final report in the matter is due to be submitted before the concerned court. It is to clarify that this news is 'wrong' and the investigation into this sensitive case is under progress with all sensitivity."

Later on Delhi Police spokesperson told the media that an investigation on the case is still underway and they can't speak on the evidence due to the same. An official update will follow once the investigation is over.

The retraction of the tweet came after a dramatic day when wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik were persuaded by farmers' leader Naresh Tikait, and reportedly by a western UP Union minister, not to immerse their medals in the Ganga river following their manhandling and arrest by police.

Tikait then called a Mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar's Soram village to decide the future course of action on the wrestlers' protest.

Meanwhile, Union sports minister Anurag Thakur said they are adhering to all the demands of the wrestlers while adding that necessary action will be taken once Delhi Police files the chargesheet on the case.

"We are handling this issue (wrestlers protest) very sensitively... Whatever the players demanded, we are doing all those things. Necessary action will be also taken once Delhi police file the chargesheet... To all those politicising this issue, I would like to say that the law is equal for everyone and all the players are important to us," Thakur told the media on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh continues to maintain that all allegations of sexual harassment charges are wrong while adding he is willing to get hanged if proven guilty by the law.
