Wrestling Trials for Olympics 2024 saw a major upset as Tokyo Games silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya failed to reach the men's freestyle 57kg final with back-to-back defeats in group stages at the SAI Wrestling Hall in Sonepat on Sunday (March 10).
The group stages came into effect after seven entries were made for the category, also known as the Nordic System in wrestling. Ravi Dahiya lost to Aman Sehrawat (14-13) followed by Udit (8-10) in closely-contested affairs.

To Ravi's credit, the grappler came close to winning both bouts in the closing seconds while desperate video referral challenges were made as last-ditched 'moves'. However, conceding loads of points early in the bouts came back to bite him.
His bout against Asian Champion Aman, in particular, saw a delightful return as he cut down an 8-point deficit in the last 1 minute to just a point. However, winning his opening bout against Amit Kumar 8-4 meant Ravi Dahiya still had a chance to reach the semis if he managed to win his last group bout.
The story was no dissimilar against Udit, who led 9-2 in the second round before Dahiya cut it down to 9-10. A late challenge was made by Ravi Dahiya's corner for his final move at the death but returned unsuccessful to cost him another point at the end.
