AEW Double or Nothing 2024: Two titles change hands at annual PPV

The annual AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view celebrated the 5-year anniversary of the show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in the Las Vegas suburb of Paradise, Nevada, last night where two major titles changed hands.

In one of the most anticipated matches of the night, - Mercedes Mone (fka Sasha Banks in WWE) defeated Willow Nightingale (c) to win the TBS Women's Championship. This marked Mone's in-ring debut for the All Elite Wrestling promotion.

Earlier in this bout, Nightingale had Mone pinned after a doctor bomb, but Nightingale's allies Kris Statlander and Stokely Hathaway distracted the referee and borrowed some extra time for Mone to kick out and continue the match.

Eventually, Mone pinned Nightingale after hitting her Mone Maker finisher to win the TBS title in her first-ever match on AEW TV. This also marked her first match inside the squared circle since last year's May in NJPW.

After this match was over at Double or Nothing, Hathaway berated Nightingale for losing the bout. Statlander then solidified her heel turn by laying out the former TBS Champion with a discus lariat on the ramp and then posing with Hathaway.

Mone suffered a career-threatening ankle injury at NJPW Resurgence, last year. She reportedly signed up with All Elite Wrestling in early 2024 before making her official debut at AEW Dynamite: Big Business episode in March.

In more news from AEW Double or Nothing, Will Ospreay defeated Roderick Strong (c) to win the AEW International Championship in the opening match of the show. This marked Ospreay's first title win after jumping ship to All Elite Wrestling.

Ospreay picked up the win after countering an End of Heartache attempt by landing on his feet. He quickly followed up with a Hidden Blade and Storm Breaker for the pin as well as the title.

With this loss to Ospreay, Roderick Strong's 85-day run with the International Title came to an end that began at March AEW PPV Revolution via his win over Orange Cassidy. Ospreay then earned the title shot with the Casino gauntlet match win in April.
