AEW Dynamite Winter Is Coming 2024: First Championship Match Announced

After sitting out of handy opponents from the All Elite Wrestling roster, Mariah May will now be seen defending her AEW Women's World Championship against someone that she once believed to be her mentor-cum-best-friend.

On the latest bygone episode of AEW Dynamite, it was announced that the AEW Women's World Title will be defended at this year's Winter is Coming edition set for next month where May will put the belt on the line against Mina Shirakawa.

The match was set up as per the fallouts from this past weekend's AEW Full Gear where May had a championship celebration, three months after winning the title. As such, she was only waiting for Mina to come back to AEW.

In reality, May turned on Mina at Full Gear and tried to hit her with a champagne bottle during the celebration segment. Mina ducked the bottle and broke it with a kick. The two then went through a table off the ramp in a crazy spot.

In a follow-up angle on this week's episode of AEW Dynamite, Mina was having a sit-down interview with Renee Paquette when May came from behind and hit her on the back with another champagne bottle.

Before the attack, Mina admitted that she remained alert for a potential attack by May, especially after what she did to their former ally Toni Storm who's been from AEW programming since dropping the title to May at All In PPV in August.

Now, AEW Winter is Coming will mark the next high-profile defense for Mariah May who's been dominating the women's division. Most recently, she defeated Anna Jay on Collision to retain her title on AEW Collision in a No-DQ affair.

Mariah May vs. Mina Shirakawa for the women's championship is the only match announced for the 2024 edition of AEW Dynamite Winter is Coming set for Wednesday, December 11 from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
