Bengaluru, August 25: The first championship match on the Summerslam main show was for the Smackdown Women's Championship. It was contested between the champion Naomi and Natalya. The challenger earned the right to get into this championship match by winning a fatal-5-way match at the Battleground PPV.
Now, it's evident that Natalya was never in a better position than the champion heading into the match. She was not the original choice to compete at Summerslam, either. Charlotte Flair was the original choice to face Naomi but due to some creative conflicts, Natalya replaced her.
Plus, ever since winning the match, she never built a heated rivalry with Naomi that indicates that she is ready to win the title. So, it was predicted that the strong champion will pick up yet another dominant win against his challenger who has now become a jobber for many years now.
In reality, The Queen of Harts put up a dominant performance whereas the champion was not up to the mark. Despite being the fighting champion, she was seen tapping out to Nattie while losing the title which was yet another shocker for the fans.
According to the reports of the Dirty Sheets Podcast, it was the strong backstage heat of the officials that forced Naomi to relinquish the title despite an exciting title reign.
Last week, Naomi had a sit down with the Smackdown commentators to note on her Summerslam match where JBL asked her whether she is doing anything special during her entrance on that night.
The champion came up with an affirmative answer whereas there was nothing special planned for her. Naomi's answer did not please the creative team, at all since she announced this on live TV.
Apparently, JBL too suffered a backstage heat for asking that question especially in a time when WWE is trying to get rid of extra costs. The use of pyro-techniques was left just for this sole reason.
Naomi will still get a championship rematch but it is not likely that she will be winning the title back. Rather, names like Carmella or Tamina alongside Lana will be heading to the title picture, as seen on the recent episodes of Smackdown.
