SummerSlam 2024: Top match at WWE PLE to have a Special Guest Referee?

The match card for the 2024 SummerSlam premium live event is almost finalized on the weekly episodes of WWE programming. With a new episode of Monday Night Raw waiting for tonight, new capacities are likely to be added to the already-announced matches.

As confirmed during last week's episode of Raw, the WWE Women's World Champion Liv Morgan will defend her title against Rhea Ripley in a much-anticipated match. It appears this match will have a special guest referee.

According to the latest reports from Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dominik Mysterio will end up getting involved in a pivotal role rather than just standing at ringside for the title match at SummerSlam.

"I don't know which one it is, but was told it's not [Rhea] Ripley vs. [Liv] Morgan. Most figure that match is going to end when Dominik comes out and then he'll help someone win, whether overtly or through a screw-up and the storyline will go from there."

As seen in Meltzer's comments, he was originally responding to rumours about WWE adding a guest referee in any of the top matches of the SummerSlam card and he only speculated this change about the already announced Liv vs. Ripley matchup.

This came after WrestleVotes reported that Seth Rollins is currently scheduled to be the guest referee for CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre, "Source states the current plans have Seth Rollins as the special guest referee for the CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre SummerSlam match."

On the July 8 episode of Raw, Rollins featured in a fiery promo exchange with Punk which led the fans to believe that he would be added to the Punk vs. McIntyre make it a triple threat.

But Meltzer previously debunked that theory and noted that the Punk vs. McIntyre original lineup has always been on the table for SummerSlam. Regarding Rollins's involvement in the match, it was never billed as a three-way bout.

With a long buildup since this year's January, the anticipated match between Punk and McIntyre is yet to be officially announced for SummerSlam 2024 emanating from the Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio on August 3rd.

CM Punk is slated to appear on tonight's episode of Raw in Green Bay, Wisconsin to address the current situation with McIntyre who is yet to get rid of the storyline suspension handed to him for attacking WWE officials.
