The Rock’s Maui Transformation in Live-Action Moana: Is It All Real or Just Movie Magic?

Can you feel the love tonight? This is what we might be humming after seeing the blurry, behind-the-scenes shots of Dwayne Johnson’s Maui look for the live-action Moana. But wait – are those bulging muscles and perfect tattoos all-natural, or is there some Hollywood trickery at play?

While fans have been eagerly waiting to see if The Rock would bring his larger-than-life charisma to the island of Motunui, it seems a few well-timed leaks have given us more than just a sneak peek – they’ve thrown us into a whirlpool of speculation.

The Rock s Maui Transformation in Live-Action Moana Is It All Real or Just Movie Magic

The first round of leaked photos gave fans a glimpse of Johnson all suited up in Maui's iconic look. We saw his strong frame clad in a leaf skirt, sporting famous tattoos, and rocking long, flowing hair. It seemed like the perfect match – the man who made muscle fame in Fast & Furious was channeling Maui with style.

But some eagle-eyed internet users quickly pointed out that the physique wasn't matching up with Dwayne's usual build. Could he be hiding behind a bodysuit? Check some of the comments below:

Enter the second round of clearer photos. Turns out, those rumors weren't far off the mark. According to reports from Comicbook, the pictures revealed some telltale signs: ripples across his arms and torso that screamed "not-so-natural," as if the actor were wearing a suit. The zipper on the back? A little too convenient to ignore. And just like that, the mystery deepened. Dwayne Johnson – or should we say, Maui – was almost unrecognizable in the photos.

Regardless, one thing is for sure: even though we can’t quite see The Rock's massive muscles as Maui just yet, there’s no denying that he’s embracing the role in full Polynesian style. The long dark locks? Check. The whale tooth necklace, a cultural symbol of Polynesian high status? Check again. It seems like The Rock is pulling out all the stops to bring this beloved demigod to life.

But wait: as the live-action Moana continues to brew, we won’t just be getting Maui back on screen. Oh no, folks. Moana 2 is also around the corner, bringing our favorite Disney princess and her new sidekick, her younger sister Simea, on yet another adventure. (And don't forget, the first Moana brought in over $600 million worldwide (via The Numbers), so there's definitely some magic still left in the ocean.)

Moana will be released on July 10, 2026.
