After weeks of torment at the hands of his son Dominik Mysterio, legendary Rey Mysterio finally took a stand for himself and his family to set up an unthinkable match at Wrestlemania 39 where he faces his own flesh and blood.

During last night’s Smackdown, LA Knight defeated Rey Mysterio after some distractions from Dominik Mysterio. Rey’s wife and daughter were at ringside for this match and a loss in front of them wasn’t enough to charge Rey up for the proposed 'Mania match against Dominik.

As Rey was leaving through the ramp, Dominik approached his mother Angie Mysterio, and asked her what it feels like to be married to a deadbeat like Rey Mysterio. He also accused Angie of being a deadbeat Mom.

As the disrespect continued, Rey came back to ringside to punch Dominik in the face. The soon-to-be WWE Hall of Famer then took the mic and accepted his son’s challenge for a match at WrestleMania 39,

"You pushed me to do this, I didn't want to hit you, you made me hit you! You want a fight at WrestleMania? You're on! I'll see you at WrestleMania, son."

Prior to this, Rey & Dominik became the first father-son duo to capture tag team championships at Wrestlemania, two years ago. Now this will be the first-ever father vs. son match lineup in the history of the WWE.

Initially, it was supposed to be Rey Mysterio’s retirement match but that’s not the case. He is scheduled to enter the WWE Hall of Famer Class of 2023 on March 31, right after next week’s Smackdown goes off the air.

In more announcements for Wrestlemania 39, WWE Smackdown commentator Michael Cole noted during the March 24 episode that John Cena vs. Austin Theory for the United States Championship will kick off WrestleMania 39 Night One.



Later in the show, Natalya & Shotzi defeated Lacey Evans & Xia Li to qualify for the Women’s WrestleMania Showcase Fatal-4-Way Match. Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler also declared themselves to be a part of the match following Nattie & Shotzi’s win.

With that, 12 matches have officially been confirmed for WWE Wrestlemania 39 Premium Live Event which takes place Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match card currently stands as follows,

– Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn
