WrestleMania 40: Update on heel-turn and major record at WWE PLE

On the Road to WrestleMania 40, WWE delivered the second last episode of Friday Night SmackDown, last week where we saw a tense confrontation going down between Legado del Fantasma and the LWO.

During that promo segment, a tag team match was also booked at WrestleMania 40 where Rey Mysterio took the spotlight by proposing the match where he would team up with a partner of his choice against Santos Escobar and Dominik Mysterio.

Initially, Carlito was supposed to be his pick but Rey Mysterio surprised everyone by introducing Dragon Lee as the newest member of the LWO and also WrestleMania 40 tag team partner. This storyline shift must have also reserved a future feud.

The camera captured Carlito's reaction during this moment and according to the updates from WWFOldSchool, WWE essentially hinted at a potential heel turn for the Ruthless Aggression Era veteran at the biggest show of 2024.

Rey has already been betrayed by Escobar in a surprising turn of events on Smackdown that has led to this WrestleMania bout in the first place. Now another turn-on might cost him the big matchup and his redemption.

In more news around WrestleMania 40, Gunther is set to defend the Intercontinental Championship against Sami Zayn at the PLE. With this defense, the top WWE Star will join 3 WWF Legends in terms of a rare accolade.

After competing at WrestleMania, this weekend, The Ring General will be included to a list of wrestlers who defended the Intercontinental Title at consecutive Mania shows. The elite list of previous IC title-holders goes as follows:

  • Randy Savage (WrestleMania 2 in 1986 and WrestleMania 3 in 1987)
  • Ultimate Warrior (WrestleMania 5 in 1989 and WrestleMania 6 in 1990)
  • The Rock (WrestleMania 13 in 1997 and WrestleMania 14 in 1998)
  • Gunther (WrestleMania 39 in 2023 and WrestleMania 40 in 2024)

It should be noted that Savage and Gunther possess a continuous title reign at both the WrestleMania events. Winning the title in June 2022, Gunther has surpassed 650+ days to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time.
